It lies on the A1079 about east of York, on the River Derwent and the East Riding of Yorkshire border. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 194. Before 1996 it had been part of the Selby district. Former ''Emmerdale'' actor Frazer Hines has a stud farm here. The route of The White Rose Way, a long distance walk from Leeds to Scarborough, North Yorkshire also passes through. In 1823 Kexby, then part of the East Riding of Yorkshire, had a population of 149.
